Coenzyme Q10, a vitamin-like substance found in every cell, is essential for energy production, cell growth, and maintenance. It plays a crucial role in producing ATP, the energy currency of cells, acting like a rechargeable battery. Coenzyme Q10 also has antioxidant properties, supporting the proper function of many organs and chemical reactions in the body. It is used as an additional therapy for diabetic and cardiovascular patients and as an adjuvant in treating male infertility.

Pharmacology

Coenzyme Q10, also known as Ubidecarenone, is a fat-soluble, vitamin-like substance. It is present in every cell of the body and is a vital component of the electron transport chain in mitochondrial membranes, essential for cellular respiration and ATP production. Tissues with high metabolic activity, such as the heart, immune system, skeletal muscles, and gingiva, have the highest requirements for Ubidecarenone. Production decreases with age, contributing to aging manifestations.

As a lipophilic substance, Ubidecarenone is better absorbed with high-fat meals. After oral administration, it is absorbed from the small intestine into the lymphatic system, then taken up by the liver, incorporated into lipoproteins, and released into the bloodstream. It is distributed to various tissues, including the brain. About 60% of an oral dose is excreted in the feces, primarily via bile.

Dosage & Administration:

• Co-enzyme Q10 deficiency: 150 mg daily.
• Mitochondrial disorders: 150-160 mg or 2 mg/kg/day.
• Heart failure in adults: 100 mg per day in 2-3 doses.
• Recent myocardial infarction: 120 mg daily in 2 doses.
• High blood pressure: 120-200 mg per day in 2 doses.
• Isolated systolic hypertension: 60 mg twice daily.
• Preventing migraine headache: 100 mg three times daily.
• Parkinson's disease: 300 mg, 600 mg, 1200 mg, or 2400 mg per day in 3-4 doses.
• Infertility in men: 200-300 mg per day.
• Muscular dystrophy: 100 mg per day.

Note: Dividing the total daily dose into smaller amounts taken multiple times a day can help reduce side effects.

Interaction
